Discovering the Millennium Cave

The existence of the Cave has been known for many, many years. Ancestors of the present community used the entrance to the cave as a food source. The large numbers of bats and swallows that resided there were a great source of ‘kai kai’.

They were afraid to venture inside because of the spirits that may reside there and bearing in mind they only had torches of coconut leaves and bamboo it was indeed a daunting task.

In the early 19th Century legend has it that Chief Tasru went a little further in and it wasn’t until 1987 that Serge and Renee Andikar went right through the cave.

In 1997 Michele and Samuel Andikar the present managers developed the idea of opening the cave as a tourist attraction.

In 1998 experienced tour guide and historian Glen Russell took a German film crew through the cave giving it exposure outside Vanuatu.

Today Millennium Cave is known throughout the world.
